Meet Jesus * Follow Jesus * Serve Jesus

Reaching Out: Serving those who struggle with addiction

We’re blessed to have some church members who work directly with the addictions treatment unit at Gouverneur Hospital. In December, we donated some items for stockings to folks going through detox over the holidays, and we received word back that the patients were amazed that there were people who cared about them!

Addictions to drugs and alcohol affect all of us – because we have struggled, or we have watched a dear friend or family member struggle, or because we have seen the impact of addiction on our communities and schools. How do we respond?

Part of the answer is by making sure that people who feel unlovable know and trust that they are so dearly loved – by us, and by God. We share the love of Christ as we offer acts of service.

So, what will we do? After some brainstorming, we’ve developed a list of items that we can gather and deliver to folks going through treatment:

Puzzle BooksAdult

Coloring Books

Colored Pencils

Markers

Shampoo and Conditioner

Body Soap

Lotion

Toothpaste/Toothbrushes

Brushes

and…

Homemade Cookies

We think showering folks with homemade goodies will especially communicate our love and encouragement. Please consider making cookies or brownies/treats, perhaps wrapped in sets of 12-18 cookies, which we can include in the care packages we will put together. We will gather items to donate throughout the month of June to begin, and then assess our best plan for moving forward. You can bring items to the sanctuary on Sundays and leave them near the back table, or bring items to the church office. Thank you in advance for helping to share our love and God’s love with our friends in need.

We’ve Got Your Back (to school)

Although it is only June and most of us are not ready to start thinking about another school year, the team has begun to start planning for WGYB program.  This year we will hand out supplies on Sunday August 18th.  Last year we planned for 130 students and yet we ran out of back packs and supplies. Our turn out was greater than anticipated 65 family units with 170 children signed in. Obviously with that kind of response this community is still looking to us to supply relief from the burden of preparing for a new school year. This year our goal is to prepare for 200 students. Let’s keep this going.

We are always in need of back packs, ear buds, and socks/undies for kids. Back packs are a big ticket item but let’s remember the joy they bring to a student who may not the resources to have one. Ear buds have become a need for every student.  Testing/learning is often on the computers so ear buds are a must now at school for students. We never have enough socks/undies for kids. If you can pick up a pack on sale you will be helping us a great deal.

We will still be handing out the basic school supplies however, the schools are trying to supply more of the basic items to allow parents a bit of relief. The bigger, more expensive items are what we really need help with. Keep in mind while you shop, we also hand out toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, shampoo, deodorant and bars of soap.

New this year, we also have a wish list on Amazon where you can directly order some of the school supplies we’re seeking and have them delivered to the church. We’re still populating our list as we get the supply lists from the schools, but you can already check it out and see some of the items we need.

To see our list, visit this link: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2EANH09C3INFJ?ref_=wl_share

You will find more specific lists posted soon. In July our school bus will be in the hall for anyone to drop donations off. If you would like to drop off items before then please stop by the office. If you need us to shop for you, monetary donations are always welcome.
